Paul Ryan: IRS ‘withheld information’

Friday’s congressional hearing featuring outgoing IRS head Steven Miller raised more questions about the scandal enveloping that agency, but one thing was clear to Rep. Paul Ryan on Friday afternoon.
“We have many more questions that result from today’s hearing,” Ryan (R-Wis.) said on CNN’s “The Lead.” “The one answer we did get, though, is that the IRS withheld information from Congress.”
Ryan is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and questioned Miller earlier in the day about reports that the IRS had singled out conservative groups for extra scrutiny. When asked on CNN whether he received the answers he needed, Ryan responded, “actually, no.”
“Last year we had these investigations in the Ways and Means Committee, we received all of these reports of this kind of harassment,” Ryan continued. “We questioned the IRS in hearings, in letters, and the IRS withheld all of this information that they were in possession of as to whether this targeting was occurring or not.”
Politicians from both sides of the aisle have condemned the reports of the singling out of tea party-linked groups by the agency.
“We do now know this targeting did occur,” Ryan said. “That it was politically biased, it was only of conservative groups and now we’re getting lots of questions with respect to religious groups and other groups.”
